Research Papers: Study Pathways of International Students in Australia

Many students who come to Australia follow study pathways through our education system, rather than limiting their study to one area of education. This series of papers present Australian Education International (AEI) research which highlights broad trends in study pathways by international students studying in Australia on a student visa.

Issue Title
2008/2

International School Student Movement Post-School Education
This paper examines the movement of international students as they further their education within the Australian education system after concluding their studies in the Schools sector. These post-school pathways include higher education, vocational education and training (VET) and ‘Other’ (e.g. foundation, study abroad and other non-award courses) sectors.

Study Pathways of International Students in Australia
A student's 'study pathway' is defined as the route taken as he/she progresses through his/her education in Australia. This research paper examines and compares the study pathways of two international student cohorts over a three year period to identify recent pathway trends. This paper is an annual update to a series of AEI Research Papers on international student pathways.

Study Pathways of International Students
Study pathways are based largely on the system of inter-sectoral linkages available through the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) but also include courses which are currently outside the AQF such as English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students, foundation and non-award studies.

Many international students follow study pathways through the Australian education system rather than limiting their study to a particular sector or level of the education system. This paper follows previous AEI examinations of the topic. Earlier papers looked at pathways of a single cohort of students and presented observations on their broad trends in sector pathways. As we now have a longer times series of data, this new analysis looks at two separate cohorts of student—one group who commenced in 2002, and the second who commenced in 2004.

The paper compares the more common pathways of each cohort; highlights the similarities and differences by sector and nationality; and examines the changes in pathways patterns.

Study Pathways of International Students in Australia, 2002 to 2005
This paper is an update of Research Paper 2005/1 released in 2005 and is an examination of study pathways followed by international students studying in Australia on a student visa for the period 2002 to 2005.

Study Pathways of International Students Through the ELICOS Sector, 2002 to 2004
Many students who come to Australia follow study pathways through our education system, rather than limiting their study to one area of education.

Australia has a system of inter-sectoral linkages based primarily on the Australian Qualification Framework which also incorporates ELICOS, Foundation Studies and other areas of study which are currently outside the Framework.

This analysis by Australian Education International (AEI) examines study pathways followed by international students studying in Australia on a student visa in the period 2002 to 2004. The focus is on the major pathways followed by students, differences in pathway choice based on nationality, and intra-sectoral pathways.

The paper is available in either pdf 281kb or rtf 1.55mb
