- In 2006, a total of 250 794 international students were enrolled in Australian higher education institutions in Australia and offshore.
- Of this number, 169 378 students were enrolled in Australia (up 4.7% from 2005). This was 18.8 per cent of the total number of students enrolled in Australia (902 730).

Are international student numbers capped at universities?
The Government has no cap on the number of full-fee-paying international students who may be enrolled at Australian universities. It is up to institutions to determine the optimum number they enrol.
What are the three most popular degrees for international students?
In 2007, the three most popular fields of study for higher education international students were:
- Management and Commerce – including accounting, business and management and tourism
- Information Technology – including computer science and information systems
- Society and Culture – including human welfare studies and services, behavioural science, law and language and literature.
