AEI China eNewsletter offers a new opportunity for Australian CRICOS providers to connect with key audience in China  (National Office)
AEI China has launched a new column in its successful eNewsletter that will help Australian providers profile themselves, enhance local understanding of Australian education, and communicate relevant news and announcements to a targeted audience.

2009 Round Endeavour VET Outbound Mobility Program Project Announced (National Office)
The Australian Government, through the inaugural round of the Endeavour VET Outbound Mobility Program, will provide $371 000 in funding to 11 projects. These 11 projects will provide 137 vocational education and training (VET) students with an international study experience.

Applications welcomed for Master and Doctoral degree study at Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) (Thailand)
AIT is offering financial aid for Master's and Doctoral degree programs starting August 2009, on a competitive basis, to applicants who are outstandingly qualified and to applicants who have strong academic backgrounds and proven financial need.

Opportunity to participate in an education fair in Bhutan (India)
This education fair is organised by AFAIRS Exhibitions and Media Pvt. Ltd., India’s Leading Organizer of Education Fairs, Career Fairs and Educational Conferences. Australian Education International has been among the prominent participants along with Canadian Education Centre last year.

Register for Go Abroad Fairs in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal (Canada)
Australian CRICOS-registered providers are invited to participate in the Go Abroad Fairs 2009 in Canada. AEI and Austrade are coordinating a Study in Australia pavilion at the fairs, which will be held in Vancouver on 12-13 September 2009, Toronto on 19-20 September 2009, and Montreal on 25-26 September 2009.

Customized Program Provider Directory  (USA)
A newly-launched website, http:www.facultyled.com, provides an opportunity for Australian institutions to promote their customised short-term study abroad programs. Listings on this website are free-of-charge and provide an opportunity for higher visibility of customised short-term programs. Currently, only 11 programs are listed for Australia.

English Teacher Training opportunity for Australian TESOL providers (Republic of Korea)
A Korean municipal government office of education is planning to send 40 (Korean) English teachers of  public secondary schools to Sydney for four week intensive TESOL training in July-August. Interested Australian education providers should submit quotes after reading this article in full by 6 March.

Six Victorian secondary school teachers visit Malaysia on the Sister-Schools Pilot Project (Malaysia)
A group of six Victorian secondary school teachers and one official from the Department of Education and Early Childhood Department (DEECD) visited Malaysia from 14-28 February 2009 for a two-week reciprocal teacher exchange under the Sister Schools Pilot Project.

AEI Japan has compiled an overview of the latest developments in education and training related matters for February 2009.

Korean spending on private education rises 4.3 per cent in 2008 (Republic of Korea)
Korean household spending on private education in 2008 rose 4.3 per cent over the previous year, with English-language the area of most growth at 11.8 per cent. The government is increasing funding to support expanded ‘after-school’ classes to alleviate the burden on parents. Opportunities may exist for Australian online/e-class ESL education providers.

Major education website in China releases findings of extensive survey; claims 2009 will be a “Peak Year” for Chinese students studying abroad. (People's Republic of China)
Chinese media have reported on a series of online surveys conducted by a leading education website, www.long.cc. The reports state that the surveys, which covered 7341 students and 365 education agents, indicate that 2009 may see more Chinese students studying abroad than ever before.

More Chinese universities offering English-language undergraduate-level clinical medicine and stomatology positions to international students (People's Republic of China)
Three more Chinese universities will be offering English-language undergraduate-level clinical medicine and stomatology courses in 2009. In 2009-10, there will be a total of 28 universities offering a total of 2990 positions (62 positions more than in 2008-09).

Workshop targeting prospective Chinese PhD students scheduled for December 2009 (People's Republic of China)
Fairlink Exhibition Services Ltd. has announced that the PhD Workshop China 2009 will be held in December. The event will facilitate face-to-face meetings with potential PhD students and will provide information about China’s top students for education providers  

Global financial crisis yet to have a negative impact on the Chinese overseas study market (People's Republic of China)
Despite the global financial crisis, Shanghai region education agents report that their businesses grew during 2008 and predict growth in 2009 (citing the weaker Australian dollar and strong local demand for overseas education). Agents surveyed by AEI identified new sources of demand but also noted several potential threats to Australia’s strong market position.

President Obama on Education Reform (USA)
President Obama addressed a joint session of the US Congress on 24 February 2009, where he outlined an agenda that included education reform. His speech focussed on themes rather than specifics and he outlined proposals on research, higher education, teacher salaries, and facility maintenance.

International Conference on sensors, Bangkok - Call for Papers (Thailand)
Thailand to host the fourth international conference on sensors, AsiaSense 2009, from July 29-31, 2009 at the Imperial Queen’s Park Hotel, Bangkok. The National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), Thailand is organising the conference.
