UMAP Thailand Scholarships 2009 - applications closing soon (National Office)
UMAP National Secretariat of Thailand is offering short term scholarships to undergraduate students to attend four-week exchange programs at Thai universities in particular courses.  Applications close on 15 May 2009.

AEI International Student Data YTD December 2008 (National Office)
AEI has released the 2008 statistics on international students studying in Australia on student visas. AEI’s latest data show that across all education sectors, international student enrolments in Australia have grown 20.7 per cent.

MARKETING OPPORTUNITIES:

Ho Chi Minh City Education Development Festival (Vietnam)
The Department of Education and Training (DOET) of Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) is calling for international schools, colleges, English training centres and universities to participate in the HCMC Education Development Festival held in HCMC from 26 (Friday) to 28 (Sunday) June, 2009. This is the first-ever large scale education exhibition organised by DOET HCMC. This important initiative will link the vietnamese schools and educational organisations with international education providers and businesses.

Opportunity to participate in the Maldives' only premier Higher Education & Career Exhibition. (India)
Eduvision is the Maldives' only premier Higher Education & Career Exhibition. It will be held 3-5 April 2009 at Dharubaaruge Exhibition Hall, Malé. Dharubaaruge Exhibition Hall in Malé is the only exhibition center for the entire Maldives. This is situated approximately 1-2 Km’s to all hotels situated in Male’. EduVision has been happening for the past several years at this venue.

Opportunity for Melbourne educational institutions to promote in a leading magazine (Indonesia)
To support promoting Melbourne as a study destination, Tempo magazine will publish a Melbourne Supplement. Tempo magazine is one of the most popular magazines in Indonesia with a focus on social-economic issues. The Melbourne Supplement will be published on 23 March 2009 in Tempo Bahasa Indonesia and 24 March 2009 in Tempo English Magazine.

Opportunities for VET providers (Malaysia)
The Ministry of Human Resources (MOHR) Malaysia has commenced on using part of an approved budget of RM 250 million for new skills training and job replacement. MOHR is also moving actively to engage with VET providers to implement the Master Plan on the Malaysian Occupational Skills Development and Training (2008-2020).

The Italian government has introduced reforms to the university sector following last year’s modifications to the school system. (Italy)
Following the reforms made to the schools sector in 2008, the Italian government has now turned its attention to universities, with the introduction of legislation covering a range of reforms aimed at improving the transparency, governance and financial performance of Italian higher education institutions.

Progress report on China’s higher education “Quality Project” (People's Republic of China)
The Chinese Government has released a progress report on the outcomes of its higher education “Quality Project”. Launched in 2007, the Quality Project addresses many aspects of higher education in China – ranging from piloting new courses, analysing job market needs, developing and distributing best practices for courses, and the allocation of resources.

Australian Alumni Award Winners - Indonesia (Indonesia)
The winners of the 2nd Australian Alumni Awards were announced at a gala awards dinner in Jakarta on 21 February 2009. The dinner, which was supported by 19 Australian institutions, managed to attract over 600 alumni and numerous media attention.

‘Green and gold’ innovation highlighted at 2009 Australia Day in Seoul (Republic of Korea)
AEI’s Green and Gold – Energy and Environment Innovations display highlighted a range of Australian university and other research achievements to more than 2,000 senior Korean government, business, and education contacts at Australia Day event in Seoul on 21 January. The event was also widely covered in the print and broadcast media.

Taiwan excels in Maths and Science (Taiwan)
Young Taiwanese students continue to excel in the fields of Mathematics and Science, according to the most recent Trends in Maths and Science Study (TIMSS 2007).

Taiwan Council of Labour Affairs promote skill upgrades (Taiwan)
The Taiwan Council of Labour Affairs (CLA) will implement a voucher scheme in March 2009 to promote job skill upgrading for Taiwanese Citizens. It is anticipated that the scheme will benefit up to 120 000 people throughout Taiwan in obtaining more useful and marketable jobs skills.

Australian Alumni in Malaysia Raise RM6000 for Victorian Bushfire Appeal (Malaysia)
AEI Malaysia and the Sabah Australian Alumni Association (SAAA) jointly organised the inaugural Australian Alumni Golf Competition and Networking Dinner in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.  The event was a great success as it not only raised the profile of SAAA and increased the member registration by thirty per cent but also raised RM6,000 for the Victorian Bushfire victims.

Institution to Institution Relationships with Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, Abu Dhabi, UAE (United Arab Emirates)
Masdar Institute of Science and Technology (MIST), Abu Dhabi wishes to negotiate joint research programs with Australian organisations in the areas of alternative and sustainable energy.

Opportunity for broadening international exchanges through the 12th ‘International Mediterranean Youth Festival’ in Turkey, 5th to 9th May 2009. (Turkey)
Akdeniz University in Antalya, Turkey is organising this youth festival, tilted ‘ A Meeting of Cultures’ and will be providing accommodation, catering and local transport for all selected participants throughout the festival.  This festival provides an excellent opportunity for Australian students to experience and share culture and experience with students from all over the world.

Internships in Malaysia (Malaysia)
In November, AEI Malaysia launched an initiative to encourage more Australians to undertake internships and studies in Malaysia. This includes a guide, upcoming information sessions and 25 scholarships valued at AUD$2000 each. The website www.internshipsoverseas.com.au has also been set up to provide more information about the opportunities available in Malaysia.
