Funding arrangements for UMAP exchanges are agreed between the home and host universities (or other accredited higher education institutions). Generally, exchange partners have a signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) covering the details of the agreement between the two partner higher education institutions.
The principles that govern UMAP exchanges are:
- students participating in UMAP undertake a period of formal study as an exchange student.
- the exchange study period should be for a minimum of one semester and a maximum of two semesters.

- academic credit for the study undertaken at the host university will be granted by the home university.
