Re:New AEI and the transfer of functions to Austrade

Re:New AEI

In 2009 the Australian Government announced changes to its governance arrangements for international education. These changes include the transfer of responsibility for promotion and marketing of Australia’s international education and training to Austrade from 1 July 2010.

AEI has used these changes as an opportunity to re-focus its core role in international education onto government-to-government relationships and to refresh its profile in the policy sphere of international education.

In preparation for its new role, in late 2009 AEI embarked on a consultative exercise under the banner of Re:New AEI.

Re:New AEI consultation sessions took place in March–April 2010 and involved 100 participants from 58 organisations across Australia. A Re: New AEI Discussion Starter (pdf 400kb) was developed to support these conversations.

Emeritus Professor John Dearn, Re:New AEI mentor, is analysing the outcomes of the consultation process, which will contribute to the development of a five-year strategic plan and a new mission statement for AEI.

Transfer of marketing and promotion of international education and training functions to Austrade from AEI

On 1 July 2010 responsibility for marketing and promotion of international education and training was transferred to Austrade from AEI.

The Government announced this change in the Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook (MYEFO) on 2 November 2009.

A document identifying the roles and responsibilities of the two agencies is available on the AEI website.
