About AEI

Australian Education International (AEI) maintains the leading role in Australian international education policy, regulation and government-to-government engagement. AEI’s key responsibilities are:

AEI’s International Education Counsellor Network

AEI’s International Education Counsellor Network works to advance cooperation with international stakeholders, enhance government-to-government relations and provide strategic and policy intelligence on developments in education sector

International cooperation in education and training

AEI facilitates:

  • government-to-government policy engagement
  • bilateral cooperation including agreements, joint working groups, educational/training input to free trade agreement negotiations, multilateral forums
  • support for academic and institutional policy engagement and exchange.

International education quality and regulation

AEI is responsible for international education quality and regulation though:

  • managing the Education Services for Overseas Students (ESOS) Act 2000 associated legislative framework and activities
  • implementing Government’s response to the Baird Review
  • supporting the implementation of Government policy in relation to the higher education as well as vocational education and training sectors.

Intergovernmental cooperation

AEI plays an important role on the field of global international education by:

Scholarships

Australian scholarship programs provide a unique opportunity for international scholars to undertake study and research, as well as internships in Australia. Awards are also available for Australians to undertake study, research and professional development overseas.

AEI manages the Endeavour Awards program and the Study Overseas program and liaises and engages with foreign government bodies on inbound and outbound scholarship opportunities.

Qualification recognition

The National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition (AEI-NOOSR) manages international qualifications recognition, including educational and professional recognition information services and support.

International education research and information

AEI conducts research and analysis to give industry intelligence and advice on education markets around the world:

  • developing international education statistics and research
  • managing monthly international student data publication on the AEI Online website and providing information for the Market Information Package on the Austrade website
  • providing information on host country education policy.

Education agents

AEI helps education providers manage their relationship with education agents in ways that help enhance the providers’ international reputation, as well as that of Australian education, by:

  • developing and providing information on regulatory requirements and Australian education issues to education agents
  • monitoring provider obligations under the ESOS Act
  • engaging with other governments in regards to overseas education agents.
